Fredonia graduating senior Monica A. Manney was selected to receive the 2019 Lanford Presidential Prize to be awarded at Commencement on May 18.
Sticking with its mission of helping the next generation of U.S. voters be both informed and interested in civic issues, the Fredonia American Democracy Project (ADP) Committee held a tabling event dedicated to the topic of the “New York State’s Women's Rights Agenda.”
A call for submissions is now underway for the Art of Science Exhibition to be staged on May 4 at the Science Center. The event celebrates the connections between science and art. All art projects must include an explanation of the science behind the piece.
Alexander Green, a senior Chemistry major, recently presented his research, “Synthesis of Novel Nitrosamine, a Nitroxyl (HNO) and Nitric Oxide (NO) Donor,” at the spring National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, held March 30 to April 4, in Orlando, Fla.
The red carpet will be rolled out at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House for community members as well as students and faculty of the State University of New York at Fredonia for a screening of “Among the Hemlocks. Fantastic Stories from Fredonia, NY” on Thursday, April 4, at 7 p.m. Assistant Professor of Communication Roslin Smith produced and directed the documentary that explores the history of Fredonia.
Students majoring in Communication can gain valuable career insight from industry leaders, teachers and practitioners at a “Meet the Professionals” gathering on Wednesday, April 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. Ten Fredonia alums will be among representatives joining the meet-and-greet to focus on the job and internship opportunities.
Western New York-based queer women activists and cultural workers will present “Local Trailblazers,” this year’s Gender and Social Change lecture, on Wednesday, April 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., in McEwen Hall G26. Panelists will discuss the benefits of focusing on LGBTQ and feminist issues on a local level, collaboration across identity lines, strategies to avoid activist burnout and approaches to problem solving, community building and community organizing.
Having returned from spring break, it’s time for students to look ahead and make plans to register for fall 2019 semester classes. Academic Advising Services has arranged registration sessions to assist students. Individual sessions will be held on Friday, April 5; Tuesday, April 9; and Wednesday, April 10, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Reed Library, just outside of the registrar’s office.
The hot-button issue of immigration and the law will be examined by Emma Buckthal, supervising immigration attorney at the Buffalo office of Volunteer Lawyers Project, at the next Brown Bag lecture on Wednesday, April 3, at noon at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
Students seeking a better understanding of New York’s Excelsior Scholarship, which can allow students to attend a SUNY school tuition-free, are invited to attend a workshop hosted by Academic Advising Services on Thursday, March 21, 4 p.m., in Williams Center Room G103B.
