Diversity and Inclusion

The State University of New York at Fredonia is committed to fostering a diverse community of outstanding faculty, staff, and students, as well as ensuring equal educational opportunity, employment, and access to services, programs, and activities. The University values and encourages a broad range of experiences, talents, and knowledge, from people of all identities, experiences, and backgrounds, in support of inclusive excellence.

Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The primary goal of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is to create a campus climate that is favorable to the development of the human potential of all faculty, staff, administrators, and students. To achieve this goal, the office has three major responsibilities: compliance, equity of services, and diversity.

Cultural Competency Institute

The Cultural Competency Institute engages community leaders in creating a more inclusive campus atmosphere. Fredonia is dedicated to fostering a learning environment that cultivates respect for differences and prepares students to live and work productively in a culturally diverse and globalized society. The Cultural Competency Institute is a cohort-based, year-long series to cultivate an inclusive mindset and positively impact participants' communities.

Diversity Dialogues

The Facilitators Reimagining Equity and Diversity (FRED) team is a resource group compiled of administration, faculty, and students working towards making the Fredonia campus, including its individual departments and student groups, more open and accepting of all who wish to further their education here. The FRED team works with the university and its students to encourage intergroup dialogue, increase cultural awareness, and lead the charge in reimagining the Fredonia experience. The FRED team also works very closely with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, not only to educate, but to prevent prejudice, discrimination, and oppression against all people, both on campus and in the community.

Institute for Composer Diversity

The Institute for Composer Diversity, winner of the 2018 ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Media/Internet Award, is dedicated to the celebration, education, and advocacy of music created by composers from historically underrepresented groups through database resources and programming analysis.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan

The D.E.I. Strategic Plan  is evidence of Fredonia's institutional responsibility and commitment to social justice, as well as the needs of the campus community. This plan was conceived through a multi-faceted and extensive approach in which the students, faculty, staff, and community contributed to understanding where the institution has been, is currently situated, and plans to advance regarding inclusive efforts.
