Cheerleaders fifth at UCA Division II nationals

Members of the Blue Devil Cheerleading TeamThe Fredonia State cheerleaders finished fifth at the Universal Cheerleaders Association College Nationals at Disney's Wide World of Sports, held Jan. 19 at Orlando, Fla.

The Blue Devils, competing in the All Girls Division II category, performed twice during the competition, first to make it into the final eight, and then during finals. Video links to their performances are available on the www.varsity.com website.  

The University of West Georgia won the event, followed by Southern Connecticut State, Fairmont State, the College of New Jersey, Fredonia State, Concord, Scranton, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Misercordia, and Avila. Each team wasjudged on crowd-leading ability, practicality, difficulty and execution, partner stunts, pyramids, baskets tosses, tumbling, and overall presentation.

The Blue Devils entered the competition Saturday with a perfect score of 15 crowd-score points after judges looked at submitted videotapes of all the team leading cheers at their respective schools.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.

Riding the steady right arm of senior Emily Chelius, the Fredonia State softball team claimed a 6-2 win in Game 1 of its doubleheader at Buffalo State and qualified for the SUNYAC Tournament.
