Creating a 3D skull collection basically from scratch – made particularly unique because it’s a collaborative project engaging students enrolled in seemingly distant academic areas – is opening new educational opportunities at SUNY Fredonia.
Research compiled by eight SUNY Fredonia geology, earth science, environmental sciences, computer science and sculpture students and one recent graduate, with guidance from faculty members, will be on display at the Earth Science Student Forum at the Buffalo Museum of Science.
“The root question was not ‘How can I paint a piece that looks like the American West,’ but rather ‘How can I portray the experience of standing in the open land through painting.’”
Area resident George Theofilactidis, who founded specialty furniture maker El Greco Woodworking, Inc. more than 45 years ago, visited the class recently to see prototypes created by students using mostly blocks of wood that his company donates to SUNY Fredonia’s Sculpture program.
An exhibition featuring two artists who work in ceramics will be on display in the Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery from Jan. 28 to March 8.
