Sherman's aces not enough as Devils fall in thriller

Elora Sherman registered a team-record nine aces over five sets against Oswego, but the Devils fell just short, dropping a 3-2 match to Oswego on Saturday. Fredonia State handily won the first two matches, 25-14 and 25-14. Oswego took the third, 25-18, then needed extra points to secure the fourth set, 26-25, before claiming the third by just two points, 15-13. 

It was also the Devil's final home contest of the year, as they honored Sherman as the team's lone senior. 

Erin Callahan and Emma Foley had nine kills apiece, and Cayla Partsch added eight. In addition to Sherman, Molly Cassidy had three aces and Gabrielle Sordetto and Sasha Zayatz had two apiece. The Devils had 17 aces as a team. Cassidy would finish with 31 assists.

Sherman added 23 digs.

The Devils travel to Plattsburgh and Potsdam next weekend.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
