Irwin named Rookie of the Year

Senior Katie Sellers was named First Team All-SUNYAC and senior Jordan Barrett and freshman Gabby Irwin were named Second Team following the Fredonia State women's soccer season this fall. Irwin also took home the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year award as the conference's top freshman.

Sellers (Glenmont/Bethlehem H.S.), a junior forward, led the Devils with nine goals -- ranking fourth in the SUNYAC -- and 20 points. She added a pair of assists.

"Katie had her best season to date for us," said Head Coach Chris Case. "She was a true threat for us up top and certainly was a catalyst for our attack. Katie is a fun player to watch as she is capable of doing anything."

Sellers was named the SUNYAC Player of the Week and Fredonia State Athlete of the Week on Oct. 2 when she scored four times in a 7-2 win over SUNY Buffalo State University. She added another goal in a 4-0 win over Potsdam. The following week, she added two more scores in a 2-2 tie at Oswego, capping off a run of seven goals in three conference games.

Barrett (Wyoming, N.Y./Pavilion), a senior midfielder captained the Devils this season. "She is our program's rock," said Case. "Jordan does all the things under the radar that helps a team be successful.  It was great to have her recognized for her efforts and play. We will miss her presence next year."

Barrett had two goals and two assists while starting all 16 games.

Irwin (Clarence Center/Clarence) had a highly productive initial campaign from her midfield slot. She scored four times and had eight assists, ranking second on the team with 16 points. She led the SUNYAC in assists.

"She was a handful for our opponents to deal with. I look forward to her continued growth," said Case. "It is extra special to see her be named SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. We have not had that since Reilly Condidorio did it in 2008 on her way to being an All-American."

Irwin had a pair of four-point games. She scored twice vs. Washington and Jefferson, then had four assists vs. SUNY Buffalo State University. Irwin was also named tournament MVP of the Blue Devil Classic. She tallied two goals in her team's opening game against W&J and would go on to win 4-2. Irwin also helped the Devils win the following day against Utica, 2-0, and claim the Classic title.

"I am proud of each of them, it is a well deserved honor," said Case. "It is not easy to make All- Conference in the SUNYAC and to be recognized by the coaches is certainly a great accomplishment."
