Eight players, entire 2018 team cited by ITA

Eight members of the 2018 Fredonia Blue Devil women's tennis team were recently recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their outstanding academic achievement. In addition, the entire team was also cited.

The Blue Devils named 2018-19 ITA All-Academic Scholar Athletes were rising seniors Avril King (Naples, N.Y.) and Olivia MacWilliams (Olean), rising juniors Sarah Bunk (Sayville) and Taylor Marelli (Riverhead), rising sophomores Mikayla Johnson (Lakewood) and Jane Chiacchia (Hamburg), and 2019 graduates Mallory Mecca (Derby) and Olivia Miller (Springwater). Each attained a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher in order to qualify.

Coach Matt Johnson's team also received an ITA Team Academic Award for attaining a overall GPA or 3.20 or higher.

The Blue Devils open their 2019 season on Aug. 30 when they visit D'Youville.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

Pellechia earns fourth SUNYAC title

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
