Devils clip Hawks in seasoner opener

The Fredonia State women's basketball team would cruise in its season opener at home against Hilbert, 62-48. The Devils would lock in on the defensive end all game, forcing Hilbert into 25 turnovers while adding 16 steals. 

To start the game Fredonia State would open up on a 9-2 run with four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Kyla Smith found Sarah Seaman in transition for a open three before Hilbert would call the games first timeout. Out of the timeout, Fredonia would continue dial up the pressure on defense with a steal and score from Jaden Sciotti to push their lead to 11. Sciotti would then find Seaman in transition in the final 20 seconds to close the quarter up 17-5 in favor of Fredonia State. 

To start the second, Hilbert's Kayla Johnson would make a quick mid range jumper but the Devils would respond with Renee Park getting a steal and going the length of court for the easy lay up with score reading 22-9 Fredonia State.

Out of a timeout, the Devils would set up in their 1-2-2 press but Hilbert's Chloe Champagne would break the Devil's press leading to driving layup for Champagne. 

Mary Culeton for Fredonia State would sink a three pointer with just over six and half minutes remaining to give the Devils a 25-11 lead over the Hawks. 

The Devils would continue to lock in on defense with 10 steals and five blocked shots in the first half and would go into halftime up 36-17. 

Out of halftime, Fredonia State would keep their foot on the gas peddle scoring five straight points to go up 41-17. Throughout the third Fredonia State would continue to maintain a comfortable lead going into the final quarter up 48-27. The Devils would outpace the Hawks throughout the fourth and a three point shot from Seaman would cap off a game they dominated from start to finish. 

Fredonia was lead by Seaman in scoring who finished the game with 15 points. Freshman Grace Alexander would add 12 points with Mary Culeton going for eight points and snagging seven rebounds. 

Hilbert's top performer would be Johnson who would finish the game with 17 points and six rebounds. 

Fredonia State will travel to Hiram for its next game on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. tip off.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
