Devils claim big SUNYAC road win at Potsdam

Andres Martinez scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to give the Fredonia State men's soccer team its first SUNYAC win of the season, and improve its overall mark to 5-3-3.

After a scoreless first half, Brian Taylor got the Devils on the board in the 49th minute on a penalty kick.

Potsdam's Justin Mossey scored in the 54th minute. He was assisted Zach Cunningham.

Tanner Stutzman was the winning goalie for the Devils, making six saves and allowing the one score. Lucas Schiel took the loss for the Bears, making two saves and allowing two goals. Fredonia State out shot Potsdam, 10-8.

"It's wasn't pretty but we found a way to get out of the North Country with three  points," said head coach P.J. Gondek. "It keeps us in it. Wednesday against Oswego is a big game for us."

The men now stand at 1-3 in the SUNYAC, while the Bears fall to 0-4, and 3-5-1 overall.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
