Sports Mgmt students create "Biggest Loser" competition

Christine Davis Mantai

The Sports Management Exercise Science Club will be hosting the first annual “Biggest Loser: Battle of the Trident” contest that aims to promote health and wellness with a competitive edge.

The initiative is a 10-week informational fitness contest led by AFAA-certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor Tanya Marshall. She will be joined by sports management and exercise science majors to educate and motivate fellow students and employees to live healthy and get fit.

The contest is free and lasts through the final weigh-in on April 29. Contestants will receive health- and fitness-related prizes awarded in a variety of categories.

The first meeting and weigh-in is Feb. 18 in Dods Gymnasium from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 7 to 9 p.m. Contestants are only required to stay at the weigh-ins until all their measurements are complete.

Additional weigh-ins, also offered between 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in Dods Gym, are as follows:

∙ Friday, March 11
∙ Friday, March 25
∙ Friday, April 15
∙ Friday, April 29: final weigh-in day.

Throughout the 10 weeks, contestants must keep a journal of their daily workouts and food intake, make weigh-ins every two weeks and attend at least one educational workshop.

All workshops will be held in Dods 101 with discussions on nutrition, wellness or training. An e-mail or text message will be sent to contestants before the class, announcing topics to be discussed and class time length.

Workshop dates:
∙ Saturday, Feb. 19, 10 a.m.
∙ Wednesday, Feb. 23, 7 p.m.
∙ Saturday, March 12, 10 a.m.
∙ Wednesday, March 23, 7 p.m.
∙ Wednesday, April 13, 7 p.m.

Contestants may register until Feb. 25 from 9 to noon in Dods Gym. Registration forms are available at the Sports Management Exercise Science office.

For “Biggest Loser” updates or meeting times, text “LOSER1” to 27367.

Contestants are responsible to get cleared by a physician if needed and to ensure that they are fit enough to partake in the contest. To learn more, contact Ms. Marshall at mars2018@fredonia.edu.
