Peter Tucker promotes communities with county-wide poster competition

SUNY Fredonia assistant professor of Visual Arts and New Media, Peter Tucker, has developed “Community Metaphor,” a project designed to engage community members and students in improving the Chautauqua County area.

Community Metaphor is a community based art project and model that is designed to engage community members in reflection about improving our communities. Tucker is asking participation from anyone from high school students, college students to anyone is the community.

The project begins with a poster design competition in which Community Metaphor is asking anyone to create and submit a poster that asks metaphorical questions about their community. Posters may be submitted under any of these three categories as it applies to the participant including High School, College, and Community.

The objective of the project is to raise questions; however a community member does not have to create a poster to think about how to improve his or her community. The deadline to enter a poster in the competition is April 30 and can be submitted digitally or by mail. The entries will be exhibited in venues throughout the county.

The program was developed by Tucker through a project by Daniel Bystrom. Bystrom works with communities that want to create a new image for themselves and engages the community in conversations by asking individuals to think about their community in terms of a metaphor. Community Metaphor is a direct response to Bystrom’s workshop.

The first implementation of this project is in Chautauqua County and is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts and administered by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council.
