Leader won both the second and third place awards for editorial writing. “Writers researched and then wrote lively pieces — pieces that hold the reader’s attention all the way,” the New York Press Association noted.

The 2nd place award was earned by the article, "Examining the Power of Protest," which ran on Wednesday, Oct. 15. A later article that month, “Leaning Towards Technological Integration,” was selected as the third place winner.

The editorials in The Leader are written by the Editor in Chief, Ryan Taughrin, but the topics and positions are determined by the entire editorial board. The editorial board includes Managing Editor Ashley Zengerski, Lampoon Editor Brendon LePage, B section editor Ned Campbell, Layout Editor Amanda Kiesl, Illustration Editor Mary Lemcke, A Section Editor Brian Bishop, Copy Editor Samantha Stryker, Photo Editor Victor A. Green III, and Contributing Editor Calee Prindle.

A total of 128 newspapers submitted 2,944 entries into the 2008 Better Newspaper Contest. The entries were judged by members of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association and the New England Press Association. The 436 awards were presented at the NYPA’s Spring Convention held on April 3 and 4.

The Leader is an entirely a SUNY Fredonia student run newspaper. The paper is run every Tuesday during the regular school year.
