Horsington named SUNY Scholar-Athlete

Recipients of this year’s award include student athletes from 25 different sports. Collectively, these student-athletes have combined outstanding accomplishments in the classroom as well as the playing surface, posting an average GPA of 3.62.
Horsington, a music education and music performance major (clarinetist) from Rochester, N.Y. , is a two-time All-American diver, earned at the 2007 and 2008 NCAA Championships. His academic and athletic achievements were recognized statewide in November 2007 when he received the Dr. Sam Molnar Award, given annually by the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) to the male student-athlete with the best combination of athletic and academic ability in the conference.
Horsington's athleticism never got in the way of his creative and academic aspirations. In fact, his extraordinary musicianship led him to win the 2006 Fredonia Concerto Competition, one of the toughest challenges any music major can face--and an optional one. He is a member of the music fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha, and a clarinet student of Professor James East.
“The Scholar Athlete Award is one of the most selective and prestigious awards bestowed by SUNY,” said Interim Chancellor Clark. “It speaks volumes about the hard work, dedication and perseverance that our student athletes exhibit both in classroom and in their particular sport throughout the year. Their success is also a testament to the quality of the programs and curriculum that SUNY coaches, faculty, and staff provide. I commend the recipients as well as their coaches and other mentors on this extraordinary achievement.”
Scholar Athletes are selected by the Athletic Directors at each level of play. Region 3 and Region 15 of the NJCAA select recipients for two-year schools; and the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and Athletic Directors from the Independent Institutions select student athletes participating in Division III Programs.
Each student receives a congratulatory letter from Interim Chancellor Clark as well as a plaque from SUNY.
