Scores of oboists and bassoonists from area middle and high schools will gather Saturday, Oct. 23, at SUNY Fredonia’s School of Music for Double Reed Day to work alongside faculty members Sarah Hamilton and Mark DuBois, oboe, and Laura Koepke, bassoon.  The deadline to register is Friday, Oct. 7. 

The registration fee of $25 includes lunch. Applications received after the deadline will be reviewed on a space-available basis.  Parents and teachers are invited to attend at no charge.    Click here for registration and details>>

Planned activities include master classes that focus on both solo performing and techniques of playing, reed-making classes that show how to adjust reeds so they work more easily and successfully, coached double reed chamber music reading sessions and a final double reed ensemble performance conducted by Mary Kay Ortalano, a special guest.

 

Students will also have the opportunity to meet exhibitors, including Carlos Coelho Woodwinds and Miller Marketing, who will offer double reed instruments, double reed music and supplies for sale. Free double reed repair by woodwind repair technician Brenda Small, a Western New York native who studied oboe with Rodney Pierce and attended Ithaca College as an oboe performance major under Peter Hedrick. She operates Small Musical Services, Buffalo, and has been repairing all types of instruments and has been a member of the National Association of Musical Instrument Repair Technicians for more than 20 years.

Joining this year’s event will be Elizabeth Camus, oboist with the Cleveland Orchestra. She will perform a free recital, open to all, Saturday at 7 p.m. in 1080 Mason Hall.  Camus has been a member of the Cleveland Orchestra for 32 years and is a well-known woodwind chamber coach with the Cleveland Institute of Music and Cleveland Youth Orchestra. She has extensive experience as a musician and pedagogue and has a commitment to youth performing music, as demonstrated by her service on the board of directors of the Youth Orchestra Division of the League of American Orchestras.
