Blue Devils to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day

National Girls and Women in Sports DaySUNY Fredonia will host a local celebration of the 26th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Jan. 28. The event is being held in conjunction with the Blue Devils women’s and men’s SUNYAC basketball home games against SUNY New Paltz that day.

The women will tip-off at 2 p.m. in Steele Hall, followed by the men at 4 p.m. The event is free to SUNY Fredonia students and guests who are 16 and younger. Attendees 17 and older will be charged $3. The first 125 guests 16 and under will receive free T-shirts. The Northern Chautauqua Catholic School’s junior varsity girls’ team also will take part in a scrimmage as part of the halftime entertainment during the girls’ game. Various raffles will also be held throughout the day.

The event is being sponsored and organized by SUNY Fredonia’s Department of Athletics and Recreation, with support from the Division of Student Affairs, the departments of Residence Life and Campus Life, the Center for Multicultural Affairs, and the Faculty Student Association, as well as Steamroller Press, a Buffalo-based screen printing/design company.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day has been proclaimed a national day by the U.S. Congress since 1987. It recognizes the progress of girls and women in sports and the benefits that sports and fitness activities can bring to the lives of all girls and women. The day is jointly organized by the Girl Scouts of the USA, Girls Incorporated, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, the National Women’s Law Center, and the Women’s Sports Foundation.
