Bill Brown named Kasling Lecturer and Tim Frerichs selected for Hagan Award
Gary Lash, chair of the Kasling Memorial Lecture Committee, announced that Dr. William Brown of the Department of Biology has been selected to present the 2013 Kasling Memorial Lecture, and Associate Professor Tim Frerichs of the Department of Visual Arts and New Media has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 William T. Hagan Young Scholar/Artist Award.
Dr. Brown will deliver the Kasling lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m., in Rosch Recital Hall. The honor recognizes a faculty member’s outstanding achievement in scholarship or artistic performance which has enhanced the reputation of the university, and is named for Dr. Robert Kasling, professor of geography at SUNY Fredonia from 1946 until 1966. Dr. Brown’s work on the courtship of praying and Chinese mantises was featured in a New York Times article in 2006, and with Dr. Theodore Lee from the department he spearheaded a successful Geonomic Education Matching Funds grant from LI-COR Biosciences, Inc., for the purchase of a DNA Analysis System. Dr. Brown was also interviewed and quoted in the Discovery News article, “Virile Cricket Hits Copulation Record.” He earned his bachelor’s degree from Simon Fraser University, M.S. from Arizona State University and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, and is also a recipient of the William T. Hagan Young Scholar/Artist Award.
Associate Professor Frerichs will be recognized at the Kasling Lecture event. The Hagan award was named in honor of its founder, the late Distinguished Professor Emeritus William T. Hagan, and recognizes an individual who has made outstanding recent achievements in research or creativity. Mr. Frerichs has been a faculty member at SUNY Fredonia since 2006 and is a specialist in drawing, printmaking and painting. He was formerly associate professor of art and chair of the art department at Central College in Pella, Iowa. A Fulbright lecturer in Germany, he earned his M.F.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Iowa and B.A. from St. Olaf College.
