The Fredonia College Foundation Board of Directors agreed at its Oct. 25 meeting to increase the endowment spending rate from 4 to 4-1/2 percent, a welcomed adjustment that will benefit students beginning in 2014. An additional $80,000 will be available to support scholarships and academic programming and activities across the campus due to the higher rate, which was made possible by the strong performance of endowment investments and an overall improving economy.
SUNY Fredonia will pair up with the League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County on Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. to host a speaker and film presentation of, “Makers of the Movement: A Presentation on the Legacy of Women’s Rights from 1945 to the Present,” in the Williams Center Room 103B.
Being hailed by her advisor who is also one of her professors as “a stellar student on top of it all” has earned Morgan Smith, a senior from Webster, N.Y., majoring in Environmental Sciences, the honor of September 2013 Student of the Month by the Office of Residence Life.
Full participation by SUNY Fredonia faculty and staff is being sought for the 2013 SEFA campaign, the State Employees’ Federated Appeal for community services. Kathy Dyckes and Sue Frietas are serving as co-chairs of the campus campaign. The committee has set a goal of $45,000 for the 2013 SEFA Campaign, and employees who donate before Nov. 22 are eligible to win prizes in a raffle to be drawn on Dec. 5.
Don't miss the ninth annual, “Terror in the Trees.” Guests will be able to experience Fredonia's popular haunted forest tour on the Thursday through Saturday nights which "book-end" Halloween. The event will take place Oct. 24 to 26 and Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 from 8 p.m. to midnight. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Lakeshore Humane Society.
The Medical Technology program at SUNY Fredonia has been approved as “licensure eligible” by the New York State Department of Education, insuring that its graduates will continue to find employment in this high-growth, well-paying field. With that designation, SUNY Fredonia students earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology may be employed by hospital and clinical laboratories. The state now requires medical technologists employed in hospital and clinical laboratories to be licensed by the Department of Education, explained Patricia Astry, chair of the SUNY Fredonia Department of Biology and director of its Medical Technology program.
The SUNY Fredonia 2013-2014 Phonathon, held October to November and February to April provides a great opportunity for students to earn money, learn basic telemarketing skills, and help the university raise money. Coordinated by Director of Development Tim Murphy of the Fredonia College Foundation, with senior Adam LaQuier as Phonathon Manager, callers contact alumni and parents on behalf of the foundation to raise money for scholarships, and other academic and enrichment programs.
The SUNY Fredonia Safe Zone Committee will host a series of events during Ally Week, Monday through Friday, April 15 to 19, to raise awareness of issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender/transsexual individuals with the goal of creating an open and just university.
On April 22, Earth Day, the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team, will be launching “Make Your Mark,” the first tree planting project at SUNY Fredonia. The 30 trees will be planted in the area located between the Williams Center and the Kirkland Complex. The trees that will be planted have been select by Biology Professor Dr. Jonathan Titus.
