New Education grad, VISTA volunteer, pioneers STEM careers

Laurie Dutton has become a pioneer — just months after the Cassadaga resident earned her degree from Fredonia’s College of Education — by helping to introduce elementary school students to career opportunities in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines. She’s doing this as a volunteer with AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), through the New York Campus Compact, a hub for service-learning based at Cornell University.

New grad program in Literacy launched

The College of Education has launched a new master’s graduate program in Literacy. This Birth to Grade 12 Graduate Literacy program will prepare students for two New York State Reading Specialist certifications.

Sister Acts : Sibling student athletes share ‘familiar’ stories

Courtney and Rachel Poirier share a unique bond — so unique, that sometimes it’s unrecognizable. Twin sisters from West Seneca, N.Y., the Poiriers started playing volleyball together when they were 12 years old. When they entered Fredonia together last fall instead of going off to different colleges, they chose to postpone inevitable separation anxiety.

BASEBALL – Head coach: Matt Palisin, 13th season. Season runs from March 7 through April 29. SUNYAC Tournament: First-round games are April 30 at campus sites … The team returns sophomore slugger Mike Prentice (West Seneca, N.Y.) who led the team with a .382 batting average and a .424 on-base percentage.

Bill Nye wows 4,000+ in Steele Hall Arena

The semester’s science celebration kicked off Sept. 18 as Fredonia welcomed the one-and-only Bill Nye “The Science Guy” as its 2014 Maytum Convocation Series keynote speaker. Moved to the Steele Hall Fieldhouse after King Concert Hall sold out in a matter of hours, 4,000-plus cheering students and community members welcomed their childhood icon in rock star-like fashion. His message? “Change the World!”
