Welcome Week brings top-tier attractions to campus
Though spanning just five days, there’s no lack of marquee events lined up for students during the spring semester edition of Welcome Week.
Pixar Animation’s “Incredibles 2” will screened on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. The boisterous sequel to the “The Incredibles,” released in 2004, takes the Incredibles family on a new mission with a twist: family rolls have changed. Bob Par/Mr. Incredible (voiced by Craig T. Nelson) manages the house while his wife, Helen Par/Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) goes out to save the world.
The computer-animated superhero film ranked as one of the highest grossing films of 2018 and was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Animated at the 76th Golden Globe Awards. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 94 percent approval rating, and noted that, while it doesn’t quite live up to the original, it comes close enough to earn its name.
Students are encouraged to bring blankets and pillows. Popcorn will be free.
The "Big Blue Chill" featuring free ice cream will begin Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room at 12:30 p.m. Later in the day, numerous online games will challenge students at the Williams Center Multipurpose Room, beginning at 7 p.m. Participants toting their smartphone or tablet can sign in to play and compete for prizes. Students can also build their own mac snack at a macaroni and cheese bar.
Renowned mind reader and motivational speaker Robert Channing will take center stage on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m., in Rosch Recital Hall. He’s performed at hundreds of colleges, including Syracuse University, Miami University and Boston College, as well as 27 SUNY campuses – including Fredonia, where students have witnessed his mind-boggling show 11 times.
Tickets are not required, but seating is limited.
Bingo Night, Spectrum Entertainment Board’s most popular event, will be staged on Friday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m., in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room.
Friday is also "Frosted Friday," with free donuts in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room for students while supplies last. Hosted by the offices of Enrollment Services and Campus Life.
Casino Night, hosted by Weekend Hangout Activities (WHOA) and funded by the Faculty Student Association, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, beginning at 8 p.m., in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. Refreshments will be served and big prizes – which in past years have included televisions, gaming systems, tablets and gift cards – will be given away.
Welcome Week events are free and open to all students and are hosted by Spectrum Entertainment Board and sponsored by the Student Association.
Looking ahead, Activities Night will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in the Steele Hall Arena.
