Water resource management in Finger Lakes region topic of virtual talk

Dr. Lisa Cleckner, who serves as director of the Finger Lakes Institute, will give a virtual talk on water resource management in the Finger Lakes region on Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 1 to 2 p.m.

“Water Resource Management in New York State – A Perspective from the Finger Lakes” will examine water resources and natural capital such as landscapes and agriculture that are the heart of the Finger Lakes and its economy.

The lakes, in addition to supporting tourism and agriculture industries that comprise over $3 billion in economic activity in the region, provide drinking water to over one million residents in Upstate New York communities. Threats to the lakes and actions that citizens can take to protect the lakes will be outlined.

In her talk, Dr. Cleckner, an expert in collaborative aquatic research, community outreach and administration, will also discuss the management of threats of water resources from the perspective of the Finger Lakes.

Cleckner has a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of Michigan and worked as a post-doc and staff scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Department of Biology Associate Professor Courtney Wigdahl-Perry, an aquatic ecologist, invited Cleckner to give the talk.

The Finger Lakes Institute, affiliated with Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, is dedicated to the promotion of environmental research and education about the Finger Lakes and surrounding environments.
