Students awarded Sonnenfeld scholarship

The Marion Sonnenfeld Scholarship, which recognizes outstanding female students who exemplify leadership, hard work and a good sense of community, have been presented to undergraduate students Angie Sempertegui, Anna E. Evans and Kate Price.
The Council for Women’s Concerns (CWC) awarded the 2022-2023 scholarships at its annual ceremony held Dec. 9 at the Horizon Room.
Ms. Sempertegui is a senior from Richmond Hill, N.Y., majoring in Early Childhood and Childhood Education with a concentration in English and has a 3.95 GPA. She transferred to SUNY Fredonia for the Fall 2021 semester and has become an active and engaged member of the campus community. Sempertegui is the social chair for the Transfer Student Organization, a tour guide for the Admissions Office, an usher in the Usher Corps and a tutor in the Upward Bound Program at Dunkirk High School.
As a first-generation college student, Sempertegui’s goal is to increase diversity found in classrooms and provide students of all abilities with a supportive learning environment. She plans to obtain a master’s degree and hopes to travel abroad, visiting schools where the teaching methods she has learned originated.
Ms. Evans is a senior from Livonia, majoring in Music Education with a concentration in Voice and has a 4.0 GPA. She is very active on campus as publicity chair for Fredonia’s student Opera Theater Association and member of Fredonia’s chapters of the National Association for Music Education and American Choral Directors Association. Evans has performed in productions on campus and at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center, and as part of the 2021 Hillman Opera. Evans is a passionate and active member of her community, volunteering for the Special Olympics, Salvation Army and special education swim programs.
After graduation, Evans plans to enroll in SUNY Fredonia’s Masters in Five program, with the goal of working in a high school music program, similar to what inspired and shaped her as a young student.
Ms. Price is a senior from Dix Hills, majoring in Music Education with a concentration in Voice and has a 3.81 GPA. She is a past secretary and president of the Fredonia chapter of the American Choral Directors Association and a member of the Fredonia Honors Program. Price has volunteered extensively in support of access to the arts for young people. She has been a stage manager, vocal director and camp counselor with the Theatre Arts Center at the Suffolk YJCCC.
During the COVID pandemic, Price volunteered as a music theory tutor providing free services to families struggling financially. She is passionate about her students developing a personal connection to music. Price’s future plans include completing her Master of Music Education degree at SUNY Fredonia and entering the classroom setting.
Dr. Sonnenfeld taught German as a member of the Fredonia faculty for 25 years. She was appointed a SUNY Distinguished Professor and became the first female Dean of Arts and Humanities at Fredonia. Sonnenfeld carried the virtues of her parents of loving life, being a faithful and loyal friend, having an outstanding work ethic and taking pride in her work. The scholarship fund was established through the Fredonia College Foundation.
The Council for Women’s Concerns seeks to help ensure a productive educational and work environment for faculty and staff at Fredonia, particularly in areas related to women's concerns. It focuses on general issues of campus climate and programs as they affect faculty and staff, and on policies and procedures that affect women on campus.
Functioning as an advisory group, the CWC acts as a liaison between Fredonia employees and campus administration on matters of university policy and procedure related to women’s concerns. The CWC will begin accepting scholarship applications from students for the 2023-2024 academic year in the Spring 2023 semester.
