The Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery is seeking entries from Fredonia students for a photo competition to be held in conjunction with the En Foco traveling exhibition “Dos Mundos: (Re)constructing Narratives” that will be on display in the Rockefeller Arts Center gallery, beginning Jan. 19.

“Dos Mundos: (Re)constructing Narratives” features 12 artists whose stories are at the fringe of public attention: hidden sanctuaries, subcultures, painful identities, faraway homes, spirituality, transcendence, broken promises and all too easily ignored social ecologies.

Students are invited to contribute to this critical conversation through photographs – portraits, social landscapes, still lifes or altered historical photographs – that address inequities in their life or the lives of others, in the Reconstructing Narratives Student Photo Competition.

“These could relate to the pandemic, racial injustice, disparities in health, economic inequality, etc.,” explained Barbara Räcker, gallery director.

Gallery staff will choose at least one photograph from each entrant and print and mount it for the student photo competition exhibition to be held in the gallery lobby from March 23 through May 9, 2021.

A total of five cash awards – first place, $500; second place, $300; third place, $100 and two honorable mention, $50 each – will be presented.

There is no entry fee. There is a maximum of three entries per person. All entries must be digital with a minimum resolution of 1375-by-2125 pixels, or 300 ppi (pixels per inch). A short statement of up to four sentences that explains how the images relate to the theme must accompany the images.

Image files, the short statement and student contact information (name, address and telephone number) are to be sent to Ms. Racker via email. A dropbox, such as WeTransfer, should be used for attachments larger than 3 MB. The contest deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 28, 2021. Entrants may pick up their photograph after May 9. For more information, contact  Räcker via email or call 716-673-4897.

Students are encouraged to visit the “Dos Mundos: (Re)constructing Narratives” exhibition for inspiration. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 4 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.; and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. Three other SUNY schools are also hosting the “Dos Mundos: (Re)constructing Narratives” exhibition.
