Volleyball games will be among beach-party themed activities that will be held for newly arrived students on Thursday, Aug. 17.

Twelve Meet-Ups – fun events where students can forge connections and start building friendships over shared interests – will be staged Aug. 17 through Sept. 12, beginning with beach party-themed activities the evening of the day new students arrive on campus.

The beach party atmosphere – with volleyball, camp games and carnival food – will welcome students at the first Meet-Up that takes place just outside of Chautauqua Hall, near the sand volleyball courts, starting at 7 p.m. Funnel cake sticks have been added to this year’s menu. The Faculty Student Association has provided a grant to help defray food costs.

“Meet-Ups are all about healthy fun and making friends over common interests,” said Office of Residence Life Associate Director Kevin Hahn. “They are free of charge for all Fredonia students. The activities are low-risk, so you can engage as little or as much as you want, in whatever way you want. No skill is required – even for the more athletic pursuits.”

For a full month, Meet-Up activities will range from sports to games to crafts. Those playing Home and Away Bingo can win prizes designed to make their living spaces feel a little more like home. The Super Smash Bros. Tournament returns at a new location, the Williams Center Multipurpose Room, so gamers can wage virtual battle on the big screen.

Full descriptions of all 12 Meet-Ups, a SUNY Fredonia tradition coordinated by Residence Life since 2015, can be found online Meet-Up information will also be added to the campus calendar throughout the semester.
