Sorel competition completed, Mehta takes First Prize

Finals of the 2022 Claudette Sorel Piano Competition were held in the SUNY Fredonia’s Rosch Recital Hall on Sunday, hosted by the Fredonia School of Music.

Winners included:

Zarin Mehta, 15, of Chicago, as the First Prize winner of $4,000. Mr. Mehta performed Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 311, mvt. III and Scriabin's Sonata No. 4 in F-sharp major, Op. 30. His piano teachers are Winston Choi and Jeff Panko.

The jury gave Special Awards to:

  • Audience Choice Award and Performance of a Contemporary Piece Award: Helaine Zhao, 16, of Irvine, Calif.
  • Creative Programming Award: Luyao "Zachary" Guo, 16, of Darien, Conn.
  • Jury Discretion Award: David Choi, 15, of Los Angeles.
  • Performance of Chopin's Polonaise, Op. 44 Award: Xiaozhou Xu, 17, of New York City.

The Sorel Charitable Organization provided generous support for the event.
