A screening of “Higher Learning,” the John Singleton film that presents a college campus as a racial and ideological war zone, will open the 2019-2020 Convocation Series on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m., in Williams Center Room S204.

In the 1995 film, students from different countries, races and social backgrounds are forced to integrate when they enroll in a fictitious campus that serves as a metaphor for America itself, Mr. Singleton explained in a PBS interview. It follows three first-year students and deals with sexuality, rape and racism.

It was the third film made by Singleton, whose trailblazing 1991 “Boyz n the Hood” earned him Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Singleton passed away earlier this year.

A short presentation by Robert Dahlgren, associate professor of Curriculum and Instruction, and a question/answer discussion, will follow the screening.

The presentation in the the Convocation Series “Ivory Tower Misfits: Images of Higher Education and College Professors in Hollywood Films” and is free and open to the public. Popcorn will be served.
