Past and present combine in Reed Library exhibit

An exhibit, “Art & Archives: Robert Rie Papers” opened Feb. 9 in the Gallery@Reed in Reed Library at SUNY Fredonia.

Featured are original works from students in the Fall 2023 class, ARTS335 Monotypes/Monoprints, alongside documents from the Robert Rie papers held in Reed Library’s Special Collections and Archives.

Dr. Rie, who was born in Austria, was an attorney and a SUNY Fredonia professor emeritus, and taught German at Fredonia from 1963 until his retirement in 1975. He was instrumental in bringing the works and papers of famed author Stefan Zweig to SUNY Fredonia’s Special Collections and Archives. Rie knew Zweig as a young man in Austria, and later became co-founder of the Zweig Society in Vienna.

In recognition of his contributions to science and art, Rie was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor, First Class, in 1977.
