Lots to see, experience during virtual Family Weekend

Family Weekend 2020 at Fredonia, like most everything else, will be presented in a virtual format this fall due to the coronavirus pandemic. There will be no on-campus events.

After careful consideration, Campus Life made the difficult decision to cancel on-campus events for Family Weekend 2020. The health and safety of the entire Fredonia family is the university's top priority, so out of an abundance of caution the campus will not host families this fall.

But that doesn’t mean Fredonia will not have lots to offer during the Oct. 23-25 weekend.

Campus Life is developing and planning several online events or experiences that can be viewed from home: musical events, special student club events, and other custom programming, and is looking forward to engaging students and families as best it can while keeping everyone healthy and safe.

Live/virtual events confirmed so far include Online Family Trivia, to be held on a day and time to be announced, and hosted by Spectrum Entertainment Board. A family photo challenge on Instagram has been issued to showcase throwback and new photos. Photos can be submitted, beginning 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21, by direct message on Instagram: @fredoniacampuslife. Family photos will be posted on Friday, Oct. 23, on Campus Life’s Instagram story.

Previously recorded special performances from “Commencement-Eve on Broadway: Music from Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables and More,” a Rockefeller Arts Center production with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, held May 18, 2018, from Rockefeller Arts Center may also be viewed. These include:

Selections from “Phantom of the Opera” View the performance.

“Maria” from “West Side Story” View the performance.

Prologue from “Les Misérables” View the performance.

Also available will be “Come Fly with Me,” the opening number from the Rockefeller Arts Center’s 50th Anniversary Gala Pops Concert held on Sept. 21, 2019 in King Concert Hall. View the performance.

The Fredonia Book Store will offer an online 20 percent discount during Family Weekend to students and families on all Fredonia imprinted clothing on its website. Visit the Fredonia Bookstore website.

A printed tour of campus sculpture from the In Sight/On site program, a revolving exhibition of contemporary sculpture that began on the campus in 1998, has been prepared by Jessica Smith, a Fredonia alumna and Art Forum member. The nine-page document includes photos and sculpture descriptions and can be viewed online.

Updated information will be added to the website.
