A virtual walking tour of historic sites significant to Western New York’s LGBTQ community will be led by Coordinator of Women’s and Gender Studies Jeffry J. Iovannone on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Tour-goers will explore five sites, learning about their architectural styles and the local LGBTQ stories attached to them. Information will also be shared from the Madeline Davis LGBTQ Archive of Western New York.

Dr. Iovannone, also a lecturer in the Department of History, will share stories from his research on Buffalo’s gay liberation movement and discuss the importance of LGBTQ historic preservation efforts. He is conducting the tour in partnership with Preservation Buffalo Niagara.

This tour, based on Iovannone’s widely-shared blog series "Gay Places with Dr. Jeffry Iovannone," is part of Preservation Buffalo Niagara’s continued work to provide insight into the LGBTQ history associated with the existing historic built environment – narratives which are frequently forgotten, ignored or purposely left out.

Participants can register for the virtual tour, held via Zoom, online.

The "Gay Places" blog series can be accessed online.
