The Can-Am Trio includes (from left) Dr. Sarah Hamilton, Anna Mattix and Dr. Geralyn Giovannetti.

Dr. Sarah Hamilton of the School of Music, a member of The Can-Am Trio (so named as its membership includes both Canadians and Americans), received a nearly $20, 000 grant from the Canada Council to commission three Canadian composers to write new works for the trio, and for recording of the works.

The focus for the project is the creation of compositions that explore the possibilities of the ensemble (two oboes and an English horn) and also includes music from non-classical genres. The Canadian composers include Elizabeth Raum, Ron Royer and Shreya Jha.

The other members of the Can-Am Trio include Dr. Geralyn Giovannetti from Brigham Young University, and Anna Mattix, who is the English horn player with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The trio has a tour of Western New York planned for February and will premiere at least one of the new works in their concert at Fredonia on Feb. 16, at 8 p.m., in Rosch Recital Hall.
