Fredonia welcomes Promising Leaders

Taking the first steps toward college planning can be a daunting experience. For middle and high school students in Chautauqua County, Fredonia’s Promising Leaders program is ready to help. 

Promising Leaders is a day-long event on the Fredonia campus intended students in grades 8-10. On April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., students will attend leadership workshops, listen to speakers, and engage in activities that promote skill-building and college preparation.  

Now in its second year, Promising Leaders is organized by Pre-College Outreach, a department dedicated to connecting with the community of Fredonia to teach students about their options after high school. 

“The idea behind Fredonia's Promising Leaders is to offer an opportunity for our local Chautauqua County students to sharpen their leadership skills, to engage with new concepts and activities lead by college students and to begin to feel comfortable on a college campus,” said Rebekah Conti, the Assistant Director of Pre-College Outreach. “It's a fun and interactive way to support and inspire some future leaders.” 

The workshops and activities are conducted by Fredonia student organizations. This year, ENACTUS's Future HER team, Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society and Alpha Phi Omega Community Service Fraternity will be helping out. 

While students prepare for their college careers, parents can attend workshops on financial aid and college planning. 

Students will get to listen to leaders in the area speak about their experiences in their position. This year’s speakers include Fredonia President Virginia Horvath, County Executive George Borrello and Adam Dolce, the executive director of the United Way of Northern Chautauqua County.
