Dress up in your pj’s to benefit ‘Relay for Life’
The Guerrillas, performing at last year’s Relay for Life, are scheduled to return to the stage at this year’s American Cancer Society fundraiser.
It’ll soon be time to get dressed up in your pajamas, for a really good cause, and head over to the Steele Hall Fieldhouse.
That’s where the SUNY Fredonia Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, April 20, to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event theme is “Pajama Party.”
“Relay for Life is not a race or a run, it is an event, where we host performances, games, ceremonies and other fun activities,” said Olivia Spolar, president of the campus student chapter of the American Cancer Society. “Our theme this year is ‘Pajama Party,’ so we encourage everyone to sport their best sleep wear or comfy clothes because we will host an outfit contest with prizes.”
Relay for Life will be held from 1 to 9 p.m.
“We collaborate with school clubs, groups, organizations and businesses to make the event as engaging and meaningful as we can. There is a $1 entrance donation. Like all other proceeds from our event, this donation will be used for cancer research, patient transportation and care,” Ms. Spolar explained.
Student performance and entertainment groups already on board for the event include Sound Services, Orchesis, Fredonia Dance Team, Premium Blend, The Guerrillas, Blue Ice Step Team and Rince, the Fredonia Irish Dance team.
Organizations that have signed up to help out by conducting assorted activities include the ASL Club, Fredonia Field Hockey, Delta Phi Epsilon, Tau Sigma, Fredonia Feminists, and the Animation and Illustration Club.
Local businesses and organizations who have already stepped up to support Relay for Life by making donations to be awarded as prizes include DeJohn’s Spaghetti House, Sir PrintsAlot, the Next Chapter Bookstore, Crino Music and Domus Fare.

“Anyone whose life has been affected by cancer, anyone who knows someone whose life has been affected by cancer, and anyone who wants to celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer by making change is invited,” Spolar said. The event is open to everyone. Children are welcome.
A discount of $5 off online registration can be obtained by using the code FRED10 all day on Monday, April 8. Register online. It is not required to register online, but is encouraged to spread awareness and raise more donations.
The campus is joining communities from over 30 countries to engage in "a celebration of cancer survivors, a celebration of caregivers, a luminaria ceremony to honor and remember loved ones, and the opportunity to fight back against cancer,” Spolar said.
E-board members of the cancer society campus chapter working to organize the event alongside Spolar, a junior Childhood Inclusive Education major from New York, NY, include Madison McDonald (treasurer), senior, Childhood Inclusive Education major, Charlton, NY; Haley Evertt (events chair), junior, Childhood Inclusive Education major, Lake View, NY; and Alexia Turpyn (social media chair), senior, Communication Disorders and Sciences major, minor in Psychology, Hilton, NY.
