Devils nipped 1-0 in Classic title game

Andrea Decker scored early in the 78th minute as Mount Union claimed a 1-0 win over Fredonia State in the championship game of the 2019 Blue Devil Soccer Classic.

Decker broke into the clear and scored from about 15 yards on goalkeeper Sabrina Suriani, who had come off her line to cut down the angle. Sara Thomas was credited with an assist.

The Blue Devils (1-3-0) outshot the Purple Raiders, 18-13, and took one more corner kick than the visitors, 4-3.

Suriani finished with seven saves while Melanie Minotti, Izzy Audette, and Lauren Cullinan made the Classic all-tournament team. Minotti had three goals Friday in Fredonia State's 4-0 win over D'Youville.

Mount Union goalkeeper Skyelar Mintz was named most valuable player of the Classic. She made six saves in Saturday's title game. Decker, Mearia DeFranco, and Lily Adams were selected all-tournament.

D'Youville defeated Oswego State, 2-1, in Saturday's other game. Makenna Magee and Maggie Leeds represented D'Youville on the all-tourney teams. Oswego State's all-tourney selections were not immediately available.

Relay sets school mark

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

Pellechia earns fourth SUNYAC title

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
