Concerto Competition winners announced
This year’s Concerto winners are (from left): Austin Young, Devin Banning and Landon Gray.
Three students in the School of Music – reflecting a wide geographic range – have been chosen as the 2022 Concerto Competition winners following performances held in King Concert Hall on May 8.
The winners, selected from among 12 students from the Voice, Piano, Woodwind, String and Brass areas, were:
Austin Young (bassoon), of Honolulu, a senior majoring in Music Performance who is in the studio of School of Music and Associate Director and Professor Laura Koepke, performing the “Concerto” by Johann Baptist Vanhal;
Devin Banning (alto saxophone), of Getzville, a junior majoring in Music Education who is in the studios of Dr. Wildy Zumwalt, Adjunct Lecturer Nicholas Childs and Adjunct Lecturer Thomas Giles, performing the “Concerto” op. 14 by Lars-Erik Larsson; and
Landon Gray (trumpet), originally from Santa Rosa, Calif., now living in Fredonia, a graduate student who has an undergraduate degree from the University of North Texas and is in the studio of Adjunct Lecturer and Head of Trumpet Alex Jokipii, performing the “Concerto” by Alexander Arutiunian.
Judges included Fredonia faculty: Dr. Sarah Hamilton (Chair of Performance), Dr. Paula Holcomb (Wind Ensemble), Associate Professor David Rose (Strings), Assistant Professor Barry Crawford (Woodwinds), Dr. Marc Guy (Brass), SUNY Distinguished Professor James Piorkowski (Guitar/Harp/Percussion), Fr. and Professor Sean Duggan (Piano), SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Julie Newell (Voice), and guest judge Professor Timothy Long, music director of Opera at the Eastman School of Music.
Judges do not rate their own students.
