Department of Communication Adjunct Lecturer Nicholas Smith served as an associate producer of “Corsicana,” an independent movie that tells the story of a former slave who becomes a U.S. Marshal.

Its local premiere will be held at the Dunkirk Multiplex on Friday, Nov. 18. Screening times include:

  • Friday: 3:10, 5:20, 7:30 and 9:40 p.m.
  • Saturday: 1, 3:10, 5:20, 7:30 and 9:40 p.m.
  • Sunday: 1, 3:10, 5:20 and 7:30 p.m.
  • Monday-Tuesday: 3:10, 5:20 and 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Smith was brought onboard during preproduction in Texas. Among his primary duties over a five-week period that stretched to include the production work phase were: coordinating crew, hiring and firing personnel, securing locations and accommodations, supervising transport and budget, editing a teaser trailer and driving a box truck, among other functions.

More recently, he has been contacting movie theatres to arrange screenings.

In his classes, Smith draws upon his “Corsicana” production experiences to illustrate “the ins and outs of feature filmmaking” to his students.

“Corsicana” is a modestly budgeted western made in difficult terrain of East Texas during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “This presented many challenges, which I share with my students,” Smith said.
