Chemistry student, faculty member to engage in DOE summer research

Brandon Landis, a junior Chemistry major from Penfield, and Department of Chemistry Assistant Professor Allan Jay Cardenas will conduct summer research at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash., as part of the Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Science, Office of  Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) Visiting Faculty/Student Program.  

During the 10-week summer experience, Dr. Cardenas and Mr. Landis will engage in research to discover a new electronic pathway of reducing organic compounds for energy or fuel application.

The highly competitive DOE funded program, which collaborates with national laboratories, represents a great opportunity for faculty and students to get involved in highly innovative research and collaborate with world-renowned scientists, Cardenas explained. Its mission is to sustain a pipeline of highly skilled and diverse STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workers through undergraduate internships and visiting faculty programs at DOE laboratories.

Landis, who also has a minor in History, is a 2019 graduate of Penfield Central High School.
