‘Democracy Under Attack’ panel to be presented

A discussion of how democracy is fostered and challenged worldwide will be presented on Wednesday,  March 29.

The event, slated for 2 p.m., will be held in Williams Center Rooms S204ABC, and the public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

Moderators will include Dr. Vicki Sapp, who is Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer at SUNY Fredonia, and Alexander Fisher, a Political Science major in the Department of Politics and International Affairs. The panel is being co-sponsored by the American Democracy Project and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council.

Panelists will include:

  • Dr. Kerry Fischer, who is an assistant professor of Sport Management in Applied Professional Studies in the School of Business. She teaches a variety of courses on sports business, including sport economics, sport sociology, and sport facility management, but her true love is in sport communication and social media usage. She has been part of the faculty since 2019. The title of her talk is entitled, “Sport and Politics: A Match Made in Heaven or Hell?”
  • Senior Lecturer Raymond Rushboldt of the Department of Politics and International Affairs. He has been a faculty member since 1994 and has actively promoted student engagement on campus and in the community. He teaches a variety of courses including, this semester, Democracy Across Societies. His talk is entitled, “Prospects for Democracy.”
  • The third panelist is Michael Williams from Cortland, a Political Science major in the Department of Politics and International Affairs. He is treasurer of the Fredonia Democrats organization and a writer for The Leader student newspaper. His talk is entitled, “First Past the Post is Really Bad for Democracy.”
