Music Education major Hobel-Furrer named Honors Student for February

Autumn Hobel-Furrer, a senior Music Education major with an instrumental concentration (cello), from Lagrangeville, has been chosen as the February 2022 Honors Student of the Month.
Professor Natasha Farny nominated Ms. Hobel-Furrer, a private cello student of hers for 3-1/2 years, for the award.
“I feel that Autumn particularly honors diversity and enhances wellness,” Dr. Farny said, and added that she seems acutely aware of people’s weaknesses and needs, particularly among minorities.
“She is a motherly person who enjoys reaching out and organizing cello studio events to enhance bonding. She had the studio go apple-picking in the fall and has regular get-togethers both with the cello (having fun improvising, or more serious play-throughs of solo material) or just gathering for a meal,” Farny explained.
Hobel-Furrer has been supportive of her mentee, a first-year student, Farny added. “For career-readiness, she has an abundance of good will towards others and I can imagine her successfully inspiring students to study music.”

Outside of a Mason Hall classroom or studio, Hobel-Furrer is manager of the instrument rental office and formerly served as a student liaison and representative of the College Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, she is board president of The Improv Collective and has been a Resident Assistant since her sophomore year, currently assigned to Igoe Hall.
Hobel-Furrer became a Resident Assistant mentor in the fall semester, so she was linked with two new RAs and became another resource for them, said Adrian Vega Bautista, Residence Director of Hemmingway and Igoe halls.
“Her role was to help RAs as a resource through informal check-ins that would include discussions about programming, involvement in their respective buildings and how to adjust to the Resident Assistant role,” Mr. Bautista said.
Following her student teaching experience in the spring semester, Hobel-Furrer plans to return in the fall to complete the Music Education Mus.B./M.M. program.
