The State University of New York at Fredonia continues to be considered a top choice for higher education in the region by moving up on one of the most prominent annual rankings.

Fredonia is now ranked 14th among the top public universities in the North in the 2022 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges.” The ranking is two spots higher than the 2021 list for top publics.

“I am very pleased with this U.S. News ranking regarding SUNY Fredonia,” said Fredonia President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. “This is a clear manifestation of the outstanding work done by our faculty and staff, and the achievements of our students. I invite prospective college students to consider us as their destination and therefore experience the remarkable educational opportunities we offer to all our students.”

In the larger category of both public and private institutions in the North, SUNY Fredonia improved to 62nd in the top tier of the “Best Regional Universities,” which the magazine defines as those offering primarily bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The rankings compare bachelor's degree-granting institutions from across the U.S. on 15 diverse measures of academic quality. In the 2021 listings, Fredonia was ranked 67th.

The university is also one of seven (out of 13) SUNY comprehensive universities listed as a “Best Value.”

Fredonia also listed as a top performer on Social Mobility by enrolling and graduating large proportions of disadvantaged students awarded Pell Grants.

The annual rankings represent a comprehensive look at how schools stack up based on a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence, and aims to help students evaluate and compare data compiled by ranked colleges and universities.

The publication’s “North” region includes nearly 200 four-year universities in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

SUNY Fredonia has been ranked as a U.S. News & World Report "Best College" every year since 1989.

The U.S. News and World Report's ranking is one of several strong sets of rankings for Fredonia. Money Magazine named Fredonia as one of the top colleges in the country for quality and affordability for 2020-21, and the Princeton Review placed Fredonia on the 2021 list of "Best Northeastern" colleges for overall quality and among the best "Green Colleges" for sustainability.
