For Student Teachers
Student teaching is the culminating experience in the teacher education program. It is an exciting and rewarding time that provides the opportunity to put into practice the skills developed from courses and early field experiences.
Generally student teaching is for sixteen weeks in two separate assignments in Chautauqua and Erie Counties, 2 districts in Cattaraugus County, New York City and Aldine, Texas. Early Childhood/Childhood Dual majors and those enrolled in the award winning Fredonia-Hamburg Teaching Internship Program participate in an additional placement.
Each student teacher is engaged in full-time teaching, gradually assuming responsibilities of the classroom while developing new understandings about teaching and learning. This is the opportunity to ask questions, build self-confidence, learn the intricacies of teaching, use strategies taught in education courses and re-define their role from student to professional.
Throughout student teaching the pre-service teacher will be part of a team working closely with the cooperating teacher and college supervisor. The cooperating teacher serves as a mentor, model and instructor offering daily feedback. The college supervisor serves as a liaison between the university, the school and the student teacher observing and evaluating lessons. A Handbook will be available to guide you through the experiences.
