Dr. Michael Milligan

Professor Michael Milligan has been a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Fredonia for 27 years. He was a double major as an undergraduate, and has a B.S. in Chemistry from SUNY Fredonia and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University at Buffalo. He worked as a chemical engineer for four years in industry and government before enrolling in graduate school. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Industrial Chemistry (upper level), Environmental Chemistry (upper level and freshman non-major level), Advanced Chromatographic Methods lecture and lab (upper/graduate level), Instrumental Analysis lecture and lab, Analytical Chemistry lecture and lab, General Chemistry lecture and lab, Physical Chemistry lab.

Research Interests

Fate and transport of persistent bioaccumulative toxics (PBTs) in the environment; analysis of legacy and emerging contaminants in Great Lakes fish; atmospheric deposition of PBTs to the Great Lakes watershed; formation mechanisms of trace chlorinated pollutants from water chlorination processes; trace chemical analysis, particularly gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and other halogenated compounds.
