Childhood memories of growing up in the Bronx are revisited by Department of Psychology Professor Bruce Klonsky in a short story he wrote for the Winter 2021 edition of “Back in the Bronx: Celebrating the Experience of Growing Up in the Bronx” magazine.

In “A Mother’s Ascendance,” readers learn that Dr. Klonsky, then a “goody-two-shoes” outfitted in suspenders and a bowtie in elementary school, wants to join a gang. Only problem is the gang initiation – shoplift an item from a store. He manages to clear that threshold, but his mother had the last word with the baseball cards he’d pilfered.

The article also includes a family photo taken at Klonsky’s bar mitzvah in 1963 and a photograph of the six-story tenement building where his family lived.

“Back in the Bronx,” a quarterly published for 24 years, celebrates the experience of growing up and living in the Bronx in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.
