Kilpatricks to be honored for years of service at campus event

Alumni, colleagues, friends, former students and family are invited to join the School of Music on Saturday, April 27, for events honoring Barry and Cathe Kilpatrick, and their Fredonia legacy.

School of Music Professor and Assistant Director Barry Kilpatrick has been a beloved fixture in Mason Hall for 45 years and is retiring. Professor Kilpatrick, head of the brass area, has been a member of the faculty in the School of Music since 1979, teaching studio euphonium and trombone, Music Education courses in brass pedagogy and trombone, and music criticism. Former principal trombonist of the Erie Philharmonic, Erie Chamber Orchestra, and Western New York Chamber Orchestra, his recording "American Music for Euphonium" was praised in brass journals. He has been a music critic for "American Record Guide" for 32 years, reviewing more than 2,200 recordings, and is the recipient of the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching (2010) and the Heart of Fredonia Award (2019). Professor Kilpatrick has devoted much time and attention in recent years to assisting international music students. Four trips to China and South Korea for seminars and recruitment have helped to increase their numbers.

Cathe is a former member of the professional staff in the university’s Sponsored Programs office, and most recently served for several years as Audition Coordinator for the School of Music.

There are several ways in which colleagues, former students and friends can join in the celebration.

• Attend the Retirement Dinner honoring the Kilpatricks on Saturday, April 27, at 5:30 p.m. in the Williams Center ($30/per person, limited seating, by advance reservation only). The deadline to R.s.v.p. for the dinner is Monday, April 15. The buffet dinner and cash bar, catered by the Faculty Student Association, will include vegetarian and non-vegetarian entrees, dessert, and coffee. 
• Attend the Fredonia Wind Ensemble concert that day at 8 p.m. in King Concert Hall honoring Professor Kilpatrick. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.
• Perform in the finale pieces of the concert with the Fredonia Wind Ensemble and friends.
• Send a personal note to Professor Kilpatrick, to be shared with him upon his retirement.
• Make a gift to the Barry and Cathe Kilpatrick Music Award established through the Fredonia College Foundation. 

The School of Music invites music alumni from any studio, degree program, and ensemble to join in the celebration.
