Dr. Susan Royal, Professor of Flute and Chair of Woodwinds at State University of New York at Fredonia, has received outstanding reviews for her CD entitled The New Lyric Flute, recently released on Centaur Records. The review in The American Record Guide states, "musicianship is exemplary…exhilarating duet…fresh wave of virtuosity…Royal's mastery of color and technique." The Flute Talk, Instrumentalist review is also enthusiastic: "What is remarkable about this CD beyond the repertoire selections is Royal's gorgeous full sound…luscious vibrato and complete command of the instrument. You won't want to miss this one." This recording showcases works written for flute since 2000, two commissioned especially for this project, and includes collaborations for guitar, piano, oboe, cello and harp. Dr. Royal performed works from this CD at the KRAS International Guitar Festival in Europe in July 2009, as well as on a recital tour in Puerto Rico in March 2009, by invitation as the Royal-Piorkowski Duo. Performances from the CD have been featured on International Public Radio of Italy and Slovenia. She has previously performed on recordings for Mode Records, Beau Fleuve, Eclectics and Mark Records, as well as on another Centaur Records album entitled Freedom Flight. Works from this CD were featured on a recital tour of Puerto Rico in 2001.
A winner of Fredonia's President's Award for Excellence in 2004, Dr. Royal performs regularly with the Buffalo Philharmonic, having performed with them in Carnegie Hall and on several recordings with noted conductors such as Semyon Bychkov, Julius Rudel, Maximiano Valdez, and JoAnn Falletta. In March 2010, she performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic on their five-city tour of Florida. She has been a concerto soloist with the Knoxville Symphony, Ars Nova, Stony Brook Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, and the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, the latter two of which she has been a member since 1983. She has performed with the Chautauqua Symphony, the New Haven Symphony, the Bach Aria Group at the Bach Aria Festival, and at the Roycroft, Bach and Beyond, June in Buffalo and the New College Music Festivals. Dr. Royal, a member of the Fredonia Woodwind Quintet, has performed on National Public Radio in Boston, toured Europe with the Yale Philharmonia and performed a solo recital tour of Japan.
Dr. Royal has published articles in Flute Talk, a subsidiary of The Instrumentalist magazine, and has been a regular presenter at ECMEA and NYSSMA conventions. She has been an active performer, panelist, judge or coordinator at National Flute Association Conventions since 1977. Recent NFA involvement includes performances with the Bach Aria Group, a world premiere duo performance in Atlanta, and she judged the Convention Performers Competition from 2004-2008. In addition, Dr. Royal served as Acting Director of Fredonia's School of Music for the spring semester, 2009.
Dr. Royal has a Bachelor of Music degree from Ithaca College, Master of Music degree from Yale University and a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from SUNY - Stony Brook. She has studied with Marcel Moyse, Julius Baker, Samuel Baron, Thomas Nyfenger, and in London, with Trevor Wye.
