About the Department of Mathematical Sciences

The Department of Mathematical Sciences has ten tenured faculty, all of whom hold the Ph.D. degree. The department also has a number of adjunct faculty, two of whom are full-time, and two graduate assistants. The specialty areas of the full-time faculty cover the important fields within mathematics, including algebra, analysis, topology, combinatorics, graph theory, number theory, probability, statistics, mathematics education and applied mathematics. The department also has a full-time department secretary and one work-study student.

Our department prides itself on the close personal attention given to our students by our faculty. Our faculty concentrate on teaching, advising and working with students; good teaching is the primary criterion for faculty advancement. In addition to regularly-scheduled office hours, professors have an "open door" policy and encourage students to drop by anytime to discuss mathematics, academic life, or career goals. Class sizes are not large, usually not more than 30 in lower level courses and 15 - 25 at the junior-senior level. The bottom line: professors get to know the students very well and will be in a position to supply that critical letter of recommendation or personal reference to support an application for employment or graduate school.

Each mathematics major is assigned a faculty advisor, and students meet with their advisors regularly to plan a program of study that meets their academic and career goals. In addition, advisors and the department chairperson stand ready to help students with any academic or personal problems that may arise.
