Travis Acker | B.S. Geology | Minor: GIS | 2009
Travis is a GIS/Database analyst with Forecon, Inc., a forestry consulting firm in Falconer, New York. He has also done GIS work for Cattaraugus County, New York. As a student, Travis provided GIS/GPS support to Chautauqua County's Regional Transit System (CARTS) and the Town of Pomfret Bicentennial Tree Project.

Trever is a GIS technician with the Seneca Nation of Indians in Salamanca, New York. He completed his GIS internship with Forecon, Inc., a forestry consulting firm in Falconer, New York. As a student, Trever was a teaching assistant for GIS I.

Eileen Ballerstein | B.S. Geology | 2002
Eileen is a GIS analyst with the environmental consulting firm, Blasland, Bouck & Lee (BBL), in Syracuse. She completed her master's degree in the Geology department at SUNY Buffalo, where she used remote sensing, GIS, and hydrologic modeling to study an in the SW desert of Egypt. While at SUNY Buffalo, she also took courses in the Geography department.

Caleb completed a GIS internship with Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. He presented his work at the 2014 Student Research and Creativity Exposition. He was also a teaching assistant for GIS I. Caleb was a recipient of the 2014 Spatial Studies Award. Caleb is now in Silicon Valley working for Google's Terra Bella, extracting analytics from imagery and performing quality control on incoming imagery. Prior to that, he was a GIS Technician with Fisher Associates doing contract work for National Fuel Gas.

Lucas completed a GIS internship with the City of Dunkirk's Department of Public Works. He presented "An Analysis of Fire Protection Deficiencies: Dunkirk, NY Fourth Ward" with Zakk Hess and Jocelyn Lash at the 2016 State University of New York at Fredonia Student Research & Creativity Expo.

Joshua Been earned a Master's degree in Library Science from SUNY Buffalo. He is currently the GIS Librarian at the University of Texas at Arlington. Joshua recently coauthored the article, "Faculty and their Institutional Librarians: Developing Labor Capital by Using GIS to Teach Social Science," which was published in the National Social Science Journal, vol. 22, iss. 1 (2004).

Tory volunteered his GIS and CIS expertise at the St. Lawrence County Planning Department in Canton, New York and completed a GIS internship with the Chautauqua County Tax Map Office in Mayville, New York. He is the winner of the 2018 Spatial Studies Award. Tory is working with LiDAR data at Roadview in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.

Kevin is a GIS Analyst with Crown Castle Fiber in Rochester, New York. Prior to that he was a GIS & SAP Analyst at Innovative Contracting Services and a data coordinator and image processor for Pictometry. His GIS internship, while a student at Fredonia was with Bergmann Associates' Buffalo office and involved building a GIS Septic Inspection database for Chautauqua County, New York.

Ian is a Project Scientist with Weston Solutions, Inc, an environmental services company in the Seattle area. in He graduated from Buffalo State College with a master's degree in geography specializing in GIS He was a research assistant to Professor Tao Tang. Ian was the recipient of the 2003 ASPRS Student of the Year Award.

Rob worked with the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy to identify scenic views for preservation in Chautauqua County and interned with the Village of Westfield Department of Public Works. He is now employed full-time with the Village of Westfield.

Jacob completed a GIS internship with Chautauqua Institution's Operations Office. He presented his work at the 2014 Student Research and Creativity Exposition. He was also the GIS II teaching assistant for two semesters. He is Pod Lead with Uber Advanced Technologies Group in Pittsburgh. Prior to that he was a GIS Technician with Fisher Associates doing contract work for National Fuel Gas in Erie, Pennsylvania. Jacob was a recipient of the 2013 Spatial Studies Award.

Prior to that, she was a GIS Specialist with URS Corporation in Buffalo. She completed a Master's degree in Geography at Buffalo State College. She worked with Professor Tao Tang. While a student at Fredonia, she did data conversion work for Woodbury Surveying and Geomatics. Jenna is a GIS analyst with the City of Philadelphia. Prior to that she was a GIS technician with National Fuel Gas in Erie, Pennsylvania. She was also accepted into the University of Miami's Marine Conservation program. Jenna completed her internship with the Dunkirk Local Development Corporation in Dunkirk, New York. She was the 2015 recipient of the Temporal Studies Award in the Department of Geosciences at Fredonia. Jenna presented her poster on Atlantic Hurricanes 1851 - 2004 at the GIS/SIG 24th Annual Spatial/Digital Mapping Conference in Rochester, New York.

Previously he was the Lead GIS Analyst for Rochester Gas & Electric and was the GIS Coordinator for Cattaraugus County, New York. While a student at Fredonia, he completed two GIS internship experiences with National Grid in Syracuse. Paul was the 2010 recipient of the Spatial Studies Award.

Alex was a teaching assistant for GIS I and GIS II. He completed a project based on "Chemical Geographies," by A.M. Romero, J. Guthman, R.E. Galt, M. Huber, B. Mansfield, and S. Sawyer (2017) in GeoHumanities 3(1): 158-177. He mapped and analyzed pesticide application in the Central Valley of California.

Merissa was the recipient of the 2004 Award for Spatial Studies. She completed an internship with the Chautauqua County WaterNet project. She also worked on the study of the Conewango Creek Dredge in Cherry Creek, which was funded by CHRIC (Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation & Improvement Corporation). Merissa is a graduate student in the master's program in Geography with a concentration in GIS at SUNY Buffalo.

Alison combined her field camp experience with her interest in hydrogeology to compare methods for identifying watershed boundaries for her GIS capstone project. She was recently hired by the Watershed Agricultural Council in Walton, New York to apply GIS in support of their Conservation Easement Program, which involves working with landowners in the NYC Watershed. She also provides GIS support to the Delaware County Soil and Water Conservation District and NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service).

Rachael was the recipient of the 2003 Award for Spatial Studies. She completed an internship with the Dunkirk-Sheridan Economic Development Zone. Following graduation, Rachael was an Environmental GIS Manager with the Center for Geospatial Information Technology (CGIT) at Virginia Tech. She completed graduate work at Virginia Tech in Education, Curriculum and Instruction in Learning Sciences and Technologies. Currently, she works for Dewberry on floodmaps, HAZUS runs and hazard mitigation plans. She is a Certified Floodplain Manager.

Zakk completed several GIS-related internships with the City of Dunkirk's Department of Public Works. He presented some of his internship work, "Integrating Water Systems: Fredonia, Dunkirk & Brocton," at the NYGeoCon 2015 and at the 2015 State University of New York at Fredonia Student Research & Creativity Expo. He presented "An Analysis of Fire Protection Deficiencies: Dunkirk, NY Fourth Ward" with Lucas Bauer and Jocelyn Lash at the 2016 State University of New York at Fredonia Student Research & Creativity Expo. Zakk was a teaching assistant for GIS I. He is the winner of the 2016 Spatial Studies Award. Zakk is completing his master's degree in Geosciences at Boise State University and working as a GIS Analyst with the Office of Emergency Management in Idaho.

Howard Klayman | Bachelor of Music | 1985
Howard is a Federal Program Manager with Actiance in Arlington, Virginia. Prior to that he was the Director of Business Development at Ultra Electronics Criticom. He has donated satellite imagery, which is used in GIS 350 and displayed on the walls of Houghton Hall. While employed at SpaceImaging, Howard arranged to have an image of Fredonia taken by the Ikonos satellite on 10 May 2004. He presented this imagery to the University at Homecoming 2004.

He was also a GIS Analyst with Southern Tier West Regional Planning & Development Board following a Fredonia internship there. Dan's GIS work for Cattaraugus County was profiled in the Spring 2006 issue of ArcNews.

Shea was the 2007 winner of the Spatial Studies Award. While a student at Fredonia, he worked on several GIS-related projects for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Currently, he is an Environmental Conservation Officer with the DEC in Watertown following several years in New York City.

Brittany completed her GIS internship with the Town of Tonawanda, New York. She digitized the sidewalk centerlines in the Town of Tonawanda in support of their Complete Streets Initiative. She presented some of this work at the 2016 Student Research & Creativity Expo. During the NYGeoCon 2015 in Albany, she assisted with the Emerging GIS project for the NYS GIS Association's grant from The Fund for the City of New York. Brittany was a teaching assistant for GIS I and a GIS tutor in the Learning Center. She completed her master's in Geography/GIS at SUNY Buffalo, and is, now, an Engineering Geologist with the NYS DEC in Albany.

Clay was a teaching assistant for GIS I and provided tutoring for GIS in the Learning Center. He also worked with students in Cartography who had now GIS experience. In support of the Mineralogy course, he used Google Earth to develop a virtual field trip of outcrops and places of interest in Ontario, Canada. He is a graduate student in Chemistry at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

He's in the Market and Facility Planning department at Wachovia, siting new locations for bank branches and ATMs. Previously, he was with the Market and Facility Planning department at Wachovia and with Tele Atlas North America. Prior to that, he worked for the U.S. Census Bureau in Charlotte.

Kendra has been hired by Fisher Associates doing contract work for National Fuel Gas in Erie, Pennsylvania. She completed her internship experience with the Chautauqua County Department of Environmental Health using ArcGIS to set up a septic mailings procedure. She presented some of this work at the 2016 Student Research & Creativity Expo. During the NYGeoCon 2015 in Albany, she assisted with the Emerging GIS project for the NYS GIS Association's grant from The Fund for the City of New York. Kendra was also a teaching assistant for GIS I.

Kristina is a drilling fluids engineer at Schlumberger. Prior to that she was a drilling fluids engineer with Baker Hughes, a geologic technician with Moody and Associates and a mud logger with Horizon Well Logging.

Scott is an International Visitor Exchange Specialist with the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. He completed his master's degree at The George Washington University. Prior to that, he taught in Armenia at the Armenian Agricultural Academy, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Scott first went to Armenia as a Peace Corps volunteer.

Katie served as a teaching assistant for GIS I and provided tutoring for GIS in the Learning Center. Her practicum experience was a project she presented with Emily Beers at the 20th Annual Student Creativity and Research Expo: "Using Satellite Imagery to Supplement the Monitoring of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in Chautauqua Lake, New York." (26 April 2018, SUNY Fredonia) She attended the 2017 NYGeoCon in Lake Placid, and participated in numerous WNYGIS User Group and GIS-SIG events while a student at Fredonia.

Emily is a research analyst with Applied Research Associates in Arlington, Virginia. As a student, she completed several GIS-related internships with the City of Dunkirk's Department of Public Works. She presented some of her internship work at the 2017 State University of New York at Fredonia Student Research & Creativity Expo. Emily was a teaching assistant for GIS I and GIS II. She is the winner of the 2017 Spatial Studies Award.
