Revised General Education Program Guidelines II. Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning

For approval of a course in the area of Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning, the instructor will provide a comprehensive description of the course, addressing its aims and general requirements, including:

  1. Evidence that students will demonstrate competence in the following skills:
    1. the application of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry skills obtained in the prerequisite to solve mathematical problems of both a pure and applied nature;
    2. the development of the ability to make conjectures or hypotheses and determine their validity through logical reasoning or analysis of data;
    3. the application of quantitative skills to analyze or model real life situations;
    4. the development of the ability to analyze and interpret data presented in a number of venues (numerically, graphically, etc.);
    5. the development of the ability to make decisions based on quantitative reasoning or statistical evidence;
    6. the development of the ability to communicate mathematical ideas effectively and efficiently;
    7. the development of critical thinking and critical literacy skills in examining the validity of assumptions made in the solution of various problems and the validity of solutions to these problems;
  2. evidence that the above criteria are met by including the following assessments:
    1. frequent evaluation and feedback with the opportunity to learn from mistakes;
    2. assignments that require students to make decisions based on quantitative reasoning or statistical evidence;
    3. assignments that require students to articulate their ideas effectively and to reveal their thought processes;
    4. a method for providing for course improvement
