Literacy Education: Grades 5 - 12
Overview, Description and Purpose of Program
This 36 credit hour graduate level program in literacy includes methods and theory courses, assessment courses, a two course practicum experience, and a research sequence culminating in a capstone project. This program leads to an academic degree of Master of Science in Education: Literacy Grades 5 to 12. Earning this degree fulfills the Master's degree requirement for New York State Professional Certification, plus it can also lead to New York State Initial Teaching Certification in Literacy for grades 5-12. The purpose of this program is to produce teachers who have the knowledge and ability to work as reading specialists, or literary coaches, or informed classroom teachers at the upper elementary, middle, and high school levels.
One value of this graduate level program in literacy is the small yearly cohort size. Candidates are able to receive individualized mentoring from a dedicated group of experienced teacher educators. Two unique features of this program are the Literacy Coach Portfolio and the Practicum experience. The Portfolio enables Candidates to document their experiences and abilities performing as Reading Specialists and Literacy Coaches for peers, paraprofessionals and classroom teachers. The Practicum takes place in local schools, and candidates who are currently teaching may be able to perform some of their practicum in the school where they are teaching.
Admission and Program Requirements
Requirements for full admission to this Graduate Literacy Program are:
- Baccalaureate degree awarded
- Official academic transcripts
- Baccalaureate GPA of 3.00 or above
- GRE scores
- New York State Initial Teaching Certificate* or equivalent**
- (*Initial Certificate must be in one of the NYS "base" certification areas)
- (**Equivalent includes teaching certificate from another US state, or international certification to teach content areas or grade levels in the English Language)
- DASA Training completed
- For non-native English speakers: TOEFL* non-aggregated minimum scores of reading 22, listening 22, speaking 26, writing 24 (total minimum TOEFL score 94)
- (*IELTS scores of approximate equivalence: reading 6.5, listening 6.5, speaking 7.0, writing 7.0)
- (TOEFL 94=IELTS Overall Band Score 7.0)
- Interview with Literacy Faculty
- Two Letters of Recommendation (prefer one from former professor/instructor and one from cooperating/supervising teacher or current principal if teaching fulltime)
- Completed application form
Conditional admission may be granted if some of these requirements are "in process" but not yet complete.
