What is it?
EdTPA is a nationally available performance assessment of readiness to teach. The portfolio assessment is designed with a focus on student learning and principles from research and theory. As a performance-based assessment, edTPA is designed to engage teacher candidates in demonstrating their understanding of teaching and student learning in authentic ways. Candidates will be required to complete tasks and commentaries within a portfolio relevant to their program as evidence of planned and implemented instruction.
When did the new requirements go into effect?
Candidates who apply for their first Initial Certificate on or after May 1, 2014 will responsible for completing the edTPA as well as the other new NYSTCE tests.

An Initial Certification candidate seeking to meet requirements for Initial Certification on or after 5/1/2014 and prior to 6/30/17 will STILL be required to take the edTPA.
- If a candidate fails the edTPA, he/she may choose to complete a retake of the edTPA or take the
ATS-W (Assessment of Teaching Skills - Written), after receiving the FAILING NUMERIC SCORE on the edTPA.
- The candidate must receive a passing score on the edTPA retake or the ATS-W in order to be issued an Initial Certificate.
- On or after June 30, 2017 all Initial Certification candidates will be required to take and pass the edTPA in order to receive Initial Certification.
Please note that the “safety net” is an option, not a required course of action. A student who fails the edTPA may also elect to submit an edTPA retake.
