Application to Candidacy in the College of Education

Freshmen

Directions and Requirements to Apply to Candidacy in the College of Education

Beginning Fall 2015, students entering as freshmen to Fredonia who are interested in becoming teachers may declare and explore the education major of their choice through designated initial courses and field work. At the end of freshman year, students will need to apply to the College of Education and be formally admitted as a candidate of that program. You will receive a notice through Your Connection that will include the application form. The core program, including student teaching, will be restricted to teacher candidates only.

Applicants for Teacher Candidacy must meet the following requirements:

  • Grades of "B" or better in EDU 105/106 and EDU 225
  • Reported scores on SAT or ACT
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Record of Positive Professional Dispositions

Each program maintains requirements for continuing in the program including overall GPA, minimum course grade requirements, and maintaining appropriate professional dispositions.


Transfers to Fredonia

Directions and Requirements to Apply to Candidacy in the College of Education

Beginning Fall 2015, incoming transfer students entering a teacher certification program in the College of Education should have completed the Application to Candidacy as part of their application to the State University of New York at Fredonia. The core program, including student teaching, will be restricted to teacher candidates only.

Applicants for Teacher Candidacy must meet the following requirements:

In order to be fully admitted into any Initial Teacher Education Program in the College of Education when first applying to Fredonia, transfer students must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Proof of completion of SAT, ACT, or GRE
  • The equivalent of EDU 105 /106 Introduction to Contemporary Inclusive Education and EDU 225 Child Development - with a grade of B or above

In order to be conditionally admitted into any Initial Teacher Education Program in the College of Education when first applying to Fredonia, transfer students must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0

And if either or both of the following applies:

  • Proof of completion of SAT, ACT, or GRE must be submitted by the end of the semester in which the student is applying
  • The equivalent of EDU 105/106 Introduction to Contemporary Inclusive Education and EDU 225 Childhood Development- with a grade of "B" or above by the end of the semester in which the student is applying

Transfer students who are conditionally admitted into candidacy and who do not successfully meet their conditions by the end of their first semester will need reapply when all of their conditions are met.


Current Fredonia Students - Changing to Education (Internal Transfers)

Directions and Requirements to Apply to Candidacy in the College of Education

Beginning Fall 2015, any current Fredonia students interested in changing their major to education (internal transfers) are required to have an overall Fredonia grade point average of at least 3.0 if 24 or more credit hours have been earned. A Fredonia grade point average of at least 2.75 is required if 23 or fewer credit hours have been earned.

Internal transfers who apply and meet the GPA requirements will be accepted into the College of Education and may explore the education major of their choice through designated initial courses and field work. At the end of their first full year, these students will need to apply to the College of Education and be formally admitted as a candidate of that program. The core program, including student teaching, will be restricted to teacher candidates only.
